Karaoke Trend in Europe: Slowly Sheds Its Stigma

Karaoke still has a bit of a bad rep, even in 2025. Is this really deserved? When we at SUNVIG talk to new clients, we often wait to mention the word “karaoke” until later in the chat. Not because we’re embarrassed about what we provide, but a lot of business owners still associate karaoke with a bunch of drunk people, demolished furniture, and awkward performances of cheesy love songs.

Where Does This Image Come From?

Karaoke originated in Japan. The term itself is a combination of the Japanese words “kara” (empty) and “okesutora” (orchestra). In the early 1970s, the first machine was developed by a musician named Daisuke Inoue, that played instrumental tracks to sing along with. It soon became popular in Japanese bars and clubs. In the late 1980s/ early 1990s, karaoke’s popularity had spread to other parts of the world, transforming into a mainstream form of entertainment with numerous karaoke bars and private singing rooms across other parts of Asia, the United States, and Europe. When the ’90s wrapped up, karaoke was still around but started to take a backseat. People from that time seemed to move on, turning karaoke into more of a niche hobby. This change didn’t do much for its reputation, especially since it got linked to sketchy places, which made people think of drunk visitors and wild behavior.

Karaoke now

Jump to 2025, and karaoke is still evolving. In recent years, private karaoke rooms have really taken off in Family Entertainment Centers. More and more hotels, restaurants, bars, and vacation spots are getting into karaoke lately.

However, we’re still in a time that’s feeling the impact of a global pandemic, which put a damper on a lot of in-person entertainment ideas. But this pandemic actually made karaoke more popular: during lockdowns, people started using TikTok a lot more. Lots of people, especially kids and teens, started posting singing and dancing videos on social media. The fear and shame of performing publicly have diminished significantly as a result.

Will Karaoke Finally Lose Its Stigma?

Yes, it certainly will. The process of shedding negative associations has already begun. Karaoke is gaining traction among businesses as a way to engage customers through interactive entertainment. Private karaoke rooms feature high-quality sound systems and inviting interiors, focusing on providing a memorable guest experience rather than the old, chaotic vibe.

Social media is motivating people to express themselves freely, leading to an anticipated rise in karaoke’s popularity. Younger audiences, along with older generations rediscovering their passion for performance, are ready to pour themselves into karaoke as an enjoyable, contemporary activity as we enter 2025.
